Intent

At Valley View, we strive for children to become reflective learners, developing resilience and perseverance as individuals and collaboratively as part of a team. By using an iterative approach to problem solving and thinking in imaginative and creative ways, we will prepare our children for an increasingly complex world.

Through our ambitious and progressive DT curriculum, children will be challenged as they develop their knowledge, skills and curiosity around how and why things work. Children will develop an understanding about how all products have to be designed for a purpose and how these shape their own lives and can be used improve the lives of others in their communities. As our children increase their understanding and appreciation of how technology impacts our world, they will begin to consider the needs, wants and values and those of others.

At Valley View, we want our children to be proud of the products that they design and make with sustainability at the centre of everything we do. Through becoming more environmentally conscious, children will be prepared for an ever-changing world and how they can make a deep and meaningful impact on the world around them through design technology.

We aim to give children the opportunity to display their learning for others to see whilst being respectful and showing a positive attitude towards others and become socially confident when voicing opinions.

Implementation

At Valley View, Design and technology is a hands on subject where the children will be solving problems and practising the skills that they will need in the real world. Our curriculum is a skills based curriculum which means that the skills taught in each year group are built on so that all children are exposed to the skills they need to be able to progress in design and technology.

These skills cover design, technical knowledge, making, and evaluation. In each project, the children cover all of these areas whilst developing the skills needed to create an end product that meets a need or specific criteria. We incorporate mechanisms, textiles, structures and food into our curriculum. Computers are used in Key Stage 2 to allow children to design and visualise products for a purpose through computer aided design.
