Laver Class 2017-2018

Thursday 7th June

Year 4 have been practising hard for their poetry performance on Thursday. Here are some photos of our rehearsals. We hope you're looking forward to the final show!

Thursday 17th May

Over the last few weeks, Mr Anderson from Leeds West Academy has come to work with Laver in P.E. We've developed our cricket skills and have enjoyed making good use of the sports fields!

Friday 4th May

Before Easter, Laver class enjoyed planting some trees in the garden area. These pictures are of us in action! We are now looking forward to exploring the garden again next week, as part of our science topic, and will look to see how our trees are getting on.

Friday 20th April

Yesterday, Laver Class had a fantastic day at Rodley Nature Reserve. In the morning sunshine, we explored the different habitats, searching for living things. Then, in the afternoon, we found out about beekeeping, had a go at bird-watching and enjoyed some pond dipping.

26th March

On Friday, the whole school took part in the Sports Relief challenge. We ran, skipped, hopped and walked around the playground for as many laps as we could. Even when it got tiring, we persevered and kept on going! Have a look at our action photos!

8th March 2018

World Book Day.  The Year 4 children who made it through the snow couldn't resist a photo opportunity.  We popped out in the chilly but glorious sunshine dressed as our book characters before returning to write various blurbs for our character's adventure.

22nd February 2018

On Wednesday, Laver Class performed a fantastic assembly to other years and parents. The assembly was all about our visit to Lineham Farm. The children worked hard to speak loudly and clearly and summarise the visit in just seven words.

9th February 2018

Over the last week, Laver Class have been working hard on division in maths. We've looked at a variety methods and enjoyed working outside to divide the class into different amounts.

25th January 2018

This week, Laver Class have been looking at different sewing techniques in preparation for an exciting DT project! We have learnt different stitches and written some instructions for them. Maybe our instructions will help teach other members of the family how to sew!

11th January 2018

Happy New Year!

Laver Class have had a fantastic week at Lineham Farm. We've been cycling, climbing orienteering, exploring the woods, looking after animals...the list is endless! The children have been extremely positive, even when some of the activities were challenging. They returned on Wednesday, exhausted and muddy, but extremely proud of their achievements!

14th December 2017

Laver Class and Loxley Class have learning a Christmas song this week to sing to the children in the seven other countries involved in our latest Erasmus project. Each country sang a Christmas song that we listened to by using our webcam on Google Hangouts. The other countries involved were Spain, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria and Latvia. It was very interesting to see and hear children from the other countries and we hope they enjoyed our version of 'Winter Wonderland'!

4th December 2017

Laver Class have been learning about the Blitz.  In P.E., we've created some drama and dance to re-enact things such as hearing the air-raid siren and hiding in a bomb shelter.

17th November 2017

This week has been anti-bullying week. We have been learning about what bullying is and what we can do to prevent it. We enjoyed looking at bullying scenarios including those in well-known books such as Harry Potter. Then we made our own anti-bullying book. Have a look at the finished product!

3rd November 2017

This week we have been carrying out an investigation about the effects of different drinks on our teeth. We tested coke, orange juice and water to see which would damage an egg shell the most. After a few days, we looked at the results. Can you guess which is which?

20th October 2017

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been designing and making Roman shields. We first painted them red for Mars, God of War and then thought carefully about which symbols and patterns to put on them. For example, lightning bolts to represent power or a wreath to symbolise victory. When they were ready, we used them to re-enact some classic Roman battle formations!

 12 October 2017

Today we had our Curriculum Meetings for parents to let you know what and how we teach, and how you can help at home.  You can find the presentation below.

6th October 2017

In science we have begun to look at the digestive system. First we focused on the mouth where food is broken down into smaller pieces and mixed with saliva. We simulated this by mixing bananas, crackers and water in a plastic bag and crushing it with our hands.

18 September 2017

We have been learning about the Romans in our topic work and in maths we have looked at Roman numerals up to 100. We had fun creating the numerals with art straws but we had to remember to think carefully with bigger numbers!
